Teresa of Avila Parish Site. Catechesis of the Good Shepherd. This week the Level II children will continue to meditate on the History of the Kingdom of God by working with a material called the Fettuccia which consists of over 50 meters of grosgrain ribbon wound on a spool. This material sparks the child's imagination by providing a tangible and visible depiction of the remarkable expanse of time involved in this history.
The child begins to ponder both the vastness and the unity of salvation history. In our first newsletter, we wrote about "Cosmic Education. In today's newsletter, we offer parents a chance to continue their learning and thinking about this approach to presenting the History of the Kingdom of God by reading from The Religious Potential of the Child 6 to 12 Years Old pages by Sofia Cavalletti, founder of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd:. One of the most formative aspects of this approach to history, both for the children and for the catechist, pertains to the contrast between the immensity of history and our own smallness within it.
As we experience this contrast, conflicting emotions are stirred within us. We feel, at the same time, both very small and very great.
The vastness of the reality we've entered in our moment in history makes us aware of our smallness. Yet, at the same time, our "lowliness" is exalted in the realization that we are part of such a great reality.
Several of the children answered, "small," but then Marina piped in, "great! In the disparity or contrast between these poles, wonder is born; and wonder is essential to spiritual life. These considerations involve us in a continuous interchange between the small and the great. They help to form in us a right attitude toward reality; they help educate us to wonder and true humility. Our smallness somehow becomes the "yardstick" with which we can measure the enormity of God's love.
Far from being a debilitating notion, the awareness of our smallness as human creatures can give wings to our spirit, lifting us up to God in wonder and gratitude, in a hymn of joy and praise:. My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has looked with favor on the lowliness of his servant Luke ff.
So, we seek to organize opportunities for families children and parents in Catechesis of the Good Shepherd to come together as a small, intimate community to celebrate mass once or twice a year. Such a mass will be held on Thursday, November 19th in the final half of our Atrium time.
Families whose children attend Atrium on days other than Thursday are invited to come to Thursday Atrium that week in order to also enjoy mass. If you cannot come on Thursday, then please continue to attend on your regular Atrium day as Catechesis will meet each of the regular days that week.
Stay tuned for more details, but please make note of this special mass now. Email Marketing by. In This Issue. The Fettuccia. Food for Parental Thought.CGS is a common religious experience involving children and adults in which the religious values of childhood, primarily those values of contemplation and enjoyment of God, are predominant. This experience is shared in a place particularly prepared for the religious life of children called the Atrium. God and the child have a unique relationship with one another particularly before the age of six.
The growth of this relationship should be assisted by the adult, but is directed by the Spirit of God within the child. Children need their own place to foster the growth of that relationship. This spiritual growth is best served through tangible but indirect means. This requires study and prayer. The child himself will be our teacher if we know how to observe him. The atrium or prepared environment is one of the important elements that helps the relationship between God and the child to flourish.
For the child, too, the atrium is a place of preparation for involvement in the larger worship community. How do you love us?
We support catechists, parents, and others in the Church and beyond, as they grow in their understanding of the religious potential of children. CGSUSA sustains the legacy of CGS by forming adults in this method and serving as the resource to the CGS community so that a prepared environment can be created that nurtures the religious life of the child.
We come together in unity, as members of this Association, to support one another and share the joy of this work. Through its publications, CGSUSA gives the child a voice, passes along the wisdom of its founders, provides resources for catechists, and educates parents on the spiritual life of children.

We start the presentation as always with the lighting of the candle. We then read the very first sentence of the Bible: Genesis —. God was with us in the person of Jesus. And the ribbon comes to an end. But God calls each of us by name and we each have our own role to play on this timeline, however small. Depending on the reflections of the children, this presentation could take up a whole session or even over a period of weeks. As for myself, there was just so much to take in that I felt completely drained at the end of the day.
It sums up so nicely what we want to present to the children. For you love all things that exist, and detest none of the things that you have made, for you would not have made anything if you had hated it.
How would anything have endured if you had not willed it? Or how would anything not called forth by you have been preserved? For your immortal spirit is in all things. Very nice summary of La Fettuccia! I am planning on presenting it to my small Level II group tomorrow and appreciated your summary. It IS a amazing work! You are commenting using your WordPress. Would definitely recommend and will be eating here again! Best Italian in Cairns. Been going here for over 20 years! Cant go past the veal scallopinni or traditional ragu. We chose this restaurant attracted by the italian name and the italian dishes in the menu written in a correct spelling but wondering whether to find something close to our italian quality but we were pleasantly surprised by the goodness of the food.
The grigliata Have been there multiple times as It is finally the best restaurant where you can avoid eating Chinese or Thai. The restaurant propose Italian pasta and ravioli hand made with very nice sauces. What a great place. Staff were lovely and the food was delicious.
One of the best pasta dishes I have had in a long time. Everything was home made and so fresh. Prices were quite reasonable too. Well what a good find this little gem was!
We were the first customers on a Sunday We could see through to the kitchen where people were busy and the menu had all the usual things you expect from an Italian restaurant. Like the decor, A very uninspiring meal. Me and my friend shared a bottle of wine, an entree, bread and a main. The house Sauvignon tasted like a five-dollar bottle of wine.

Excellent lasagna and the best bruschetta ever. Nice, friendly staff, however the fresh pasta was a bit "coarse".Leslie, this is beautiful! I love seeing the ribbon go all the way up to and through the altar. Debra Thanks Debra! I love that too! We are lucky to have a great space for the fettuccia! I sure am enjoying your blog. Thanks for reading! That last picture leaves me with very mixed feelings, because I feel that there is no room metaphorically in our GP classroom for running.
Last week our newest member managed, barely, to contain his energies to a race-walk rather than a run. And I was pleased with him! I want our children to feel welcome in worship-space, to know that they belong, but to understand that we expect certain behavior and body-language And yet your photograph is so joyous and gorgeous Storyteller I know just what you mean!
I debated whether or not to put the picture in the post. That bit of running occurred toward the end of the presentation, and at the time I realized that things had gotten away from me. But it does capture the joy of the moment so I included it. Helping children to learn to control their bodies, and discover peaceful and meditative joy and contentment is a real gift of the atrium, and it helps prepare children for appropriate participation in Church.
I am wondering if there are any other presentations that are specific to the creation verses. I am about to start homeschooling my six-year old no Montessori school in our home town and we are starting off with the Great Lessons. How do the Great Lessons tie in with the Catechesis?
We are Christian, but not Catholic. I have visited two Atria here in Australia and so desire this flame to be lit in our studies. Hi Meg! With the Catechesis we focus on Jesus and the liturgy of the Church for the first two levels year olds and year olds and save in depth study of Hebrew scripture for the third level year olds when the children have a better grasp of time and history, and an ability to think in the abstract.
In level three there are several studies on creation. How exciting that you are beginning homeschooling with Montessori! Is there somewhere nearby where you could take Catechesis training?
